Face ID / Touch ID Authentication

Bank-grade biometric unlock that drives the same encryption key as your PIN — frictionless and uncompromising.

Why biometrics belong on a finance app you check ten times a day

Biometrics are the right balance for an expense app you open ten times a day. Budgie hooks into the platform Secure Enclave / TEE so the device, not Budgie, vouches for you.

Disabled biometrics fall back to PIN. Failed biometric attempts respect the OS lockout policy — five strikes and you're prompted for the device passcode, not just our PIN.

What you get

Face ID and Touch ID supported on every modern iOS and Android device

Biometric key fragment lives in the Secure Enclave / Keystore — Budgie never sees raw biometric data

Falls back to PIN if biometrics are disabled or unavailable

Respects OS lockout policy — five strikes prompts the device passcode

No additional friction at app open — same speed as your bank app

How it works

Enable in Settings → PIN → "Unlock with biometrics". The platform stores a biometric-bound key fragment in the Secure Enclave/Keystore; Budgie combines it with your PIN-derived key to unlock SQLCipher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Budgie store my biometric data?
No. The platform manages biometric matching in the Secure Enclave (iOS) or Keystore (Android). Budgie only receives a yes/no signal plus access to a stored key fragment.
What if biometrics fail?
The PIN entry screen appears as a fallback. After five biometric failures, the OS itself prompts the device passcode.
Can I disable biometrics?
Yes — Settings → PIN → toggle off “Unlock with biometrics”. The PIN remains active.
Is Face ID safer than a PIN?
They're complementary. Biometrics are convenient and prevent shoulder-surfing; the PIN is the actual encryption key. Both raise the bar.
